are you racing this fall?

Let me ask you a question.

I have spent the last 10 years writing this newsletter every single week. The vast majority of the runners I send it to open it and tell me they look forward to it every Thursday.

I share strategies on running, nutrition, mental strength, and more, and I love being a resource you can trust.

As you might be able to guess by the refreshed look of this page today (how do you like the new colors? 😍), the Planted Runner is going through some much-needed changes and updates to make what I do even better for you.

I'll be asking for your input on lots of topics coming up soon, because like everything I do, I want it to be customized to you.

The first thing I'd like to know is are you racing this fall? This will help me make sure I create content this summer that is geared towards those who really want it.

and besides, I want to cheer you on!

If you are racing this fall, smash the button below.

If you are not racing this fall, but you'd like to share what you would like to see more of from me, my inbox is always open and I'd love to hear from you. Simply hit reply and fire away.

from the team

"I didn't realize how much I needed this!"

When Katie first signed up with me, she wasn't looking for a community. She wanted great coaching. She wanted a smart training plan from someone she trusted.

For over a year, she worked with me one on one. Then she decided to give the PR Team a try.

What surprised her was how quickly the runners on the team became part of her life.

She started cheering for teammates she'd never met in person. She celebrated their PRs. She shared race nerves and training struggles with people who understood exactly what she was going through.

Somewhere along the way, strangers became friends. One PR Teammate lives in her city and now they are running buddies.

When she and her family went abroad for vacation, she made sure to schedule a run with another PR teammate who was local.

How cool is that???

Running can feel lonely sometimes. Finding your people changes everything.

If you're training for a fall race and want expert coaching, a personalized plan, and a community that truly cares, the PR Team might be exactly what you're looking for.

P.S. I built a very cool new quiz that will help you decide which training strategy is best for you! Try it out with one click.

Q:

I ran a great marathon this spring and my big goal is to do even better in the fall. I've signed up for a 5k this weekend, a half and two more 5ks in July, as well as a 10k. I'd love to do them all, but I'm happy not to if you think they'll negatively affect my November 29 marathon. What do you think??

A:

Congrats on your marathon! I hope you are recovering well (be sure to listen to today's podcast! 😉)

For a November 29 marathon, your marathon-specific training will start mid-August to early September.

You certainly can have fun and race whatever you like until then, but I'd recommend being more strategic.

Out of all the races that you've listed, I recommend that you drop the half. The other races can certainly be a part of your training this summer to help make you even faster in the fall.

The first 5k you have this weekend would set you up nicely for a speed cycle, working on your higher-end endurance fitness and stamina. Three months is on the longer side of a speed cycle (I typically recommend 8-10 weeks), but if those are races you enjoy, that's an important part of training too.

The reason I advise you to skip the half next month is because you have just come out of long-distance training. The focus on higher-end speed instead can give you the edge when you get to August.

If you wanted to run the half as an easy run instead of racing it hard, that's an option, but I highly recommend switching up your focus for a few months before marathon training.

With freshly-built 5k speed, you'll enter fall marathon season even fitter than you are now.

Of course, I'd be happy to map that out exactly for your unique situation. Just click the button to start designing your summer.

If you're a marathon runner, Michigan isn't just a state. It's a dragon to be slayed. If you've never heard of it, ignorance is bliss. The Michigan is a brutal alternating-pace workout invented by a Michigan track coach in the 1970s, originally built off a Prefontaine session at Oregon, and decades later it's still the workout distance runners bring up like a war story. Marathon pace, then faster, then faster still, then back down, with no rest between any of it. The whole point is to make...

marathon mistakes

I am not exaggerating when I say my pre-race nerves were almost debilitating. Not quite a panic attack, but close. Heart pounding, stomach turning, shallow breathing and the gun hadn't even gone off. I was determined to solve this mystery of why this kept happening to me. So I fell into a rabbit hole of breathing techniques, visualization, and cognitive conditioning. I began to practice consistently, not just on race morning but throughout training. That combination changed how I raced. And...

"But it's a dry heat," my father always says about the brutally hot climate in his hometown of Pheonix, Arizona. And I know what you are thinking: when it's 114F (45C) it doesn't matter if it's dry or not, it's just HOT! But besides the humidity, there's something else that affects how you feel (and run) in the heat. And it doesn't have anything to do with the weather or even how much you've adapted to it. It's how well you tolerate uncertainty. (I know, you weren't expecting me to say that,...
