the sneaky little way to run faster

What if I told you that there was a way to get faster, to improve your running form, quicken your feet, better prepare for a race, and have some fun, all in less than 90 seconds of work?

I’d say sign me up.

The good news that such a thing actually exists.

It’s called the stride. Or striders, or accelerations, or stride-outs. Lots of names for the same awesome skill.

But what it’s not is a sprint or a surge.

On Instagram this week, I shared this reel talking about the difference.

(And also showing you my new favorite way to make mashed potatoes!)

Don't get me wrong, surges are great. But they are not the same.

Make those long, cold runs more fun with audio books!

Q:

I'm struggling a lot with my nutrition as a runner. Do you offer meal plans?

A:

It can certainly be challenging to make sure that you are getting enough of everything you need to fuel your running and your life, no matter if you are plant-based or not.

I can definitely help with that, but I don't offer meal plans for a few reasons.

The first one is that no one should be writing meal plans who is not a registered dietician. A meal plan is a very specific and individualized prescription on precisely what to eat. It's a lot like how only doctors should be writing medication prescriptions.

Secondly, I don't think meal plans work.

At least not for very long.

A rigid plan with every bite of food calculated out might be appealing to some at first, but adherence to this quickly becomes unsustainable for the vast majority of people.

A better idea for runners is to learn the principles of fueling before, during, and after your runs first. Nail that, and the rest of the pieces start to fill in more easily.

Next you'll want to take the time to learn the basics of general nutrition for athletes and the specifics of plant-based nutrition if that's for you. Armed with this knowledge (and a few good recipes), soon you'll find that it doesn't have to be a struggle.

I'm a certified sports nutrition specialist, so if you need more help, my coaching programs or my book just might be the perfect fit.

podcast

Want hard running to feel like play?

On today’s Planted Runner Podcast, I’m going over 10 imagination mind games that can almost instantly turn a tough run into a much easier one.

This is the third show in my series of Mental Strength Minutes, so you can get them grouped by topic, all in one episode.

You’ll learn:

  • Breathing games that can change your focus
  • Games using the other runners around you, and
  • A few more of my favorites

As always, you should know that you that listening to this once is probably not going to be enough to change your running immediately. Just like running workouts build your legs when you do them consistently, your mental work is something you'll also need to practice repeatedly to get results.

Some of these will resonate with you immediately while others just won’t be for you. Take what works and leave the rest.

If you are ready to take your mind to the next level for your next race, I’ve got you covered, with my new Find Your Flow State Audio training series. Mash the button below to learn more.

In 1978, a single publication dramatically changed the way people treat injuries. And to this day, it's still one of the most common pieces of advice, which also happens to be absolutely wrong. In the “Sports Medicine Book,” Dr. Gabe Mirkin explained the acronym he invented called RICE which stands for Rest, Ice, Elevation, Compression. And for the next four decades, coaches and practitioners around the world have prescribed the RICE method as the definitive way to heal any kind of injury....

There's this romantic notion out there that we should be always be perfectly in tune with our bodies. We're told by the influencers to "listen to our body" to know exactly how to train, eat, and recover. As if there is some clear, gentle voice saying, "of course I'd rather have brussels sprouts than french fries!" or "mile 23 of the marathon feels incredible!" (if that's your inner voice, I'm impressed. Skip ahead.) If it were really that simple, that you could just listen to your body, the...
