is fatigue your foe or your friend?

There's tired and then there's tiiiiiiiiired.

When you are bone-tired after a hard workout, or you are dragging yourself straight to the couch after yet another stressful day of work, you're bound to wonder if it's all worth it.

Fatigue isn't fun. But it's a tool and a teacher.

Of course, fatigue can be problematic because it's an indicator of all sorts situations we want to avoid (too much stress, overtraining, illness, and more). It's there to tell us to slow down.

But, when used wisely in your training, fatigue can be your friend.

And it can help you achieve better results (even while running less).

Q:

I had an awesome race this spring. But I ended up walking through the water stops. I think if I just ran through them, I would have finished faster. Should I aim for that this fall?

A:

Congratulations on your race!

While we can't know for sure, walking through water stations might not have affected your outcome as much as you think. Taking a few moments to pause and actually get the water in versus slowing to a jog to spill most of the cup on your shirt might have actually helped your performance.

The little walk break might also have been enough to slow your breathing and heart rate just a little so that you felt better when you began to run again.

If you planned your walk breaks to be quick and efficient and you made up the time when you began to run again, this can be a good strategy for some.

On the other hand, if your water stops got longer and longer and your running pace wasn't getting faster to make up the time spent walking, yes, those longer walk breaks did affect your overall time.

There's nothing wrong with walking of course, but if you are spending more time walking because the running is becoming too much, that's what we can work on next time.

Some runners feel refreshed (and rehydrated!) when they stop for a moment to drink. Others feel the walk interrupts their flow and it becomes even harder to get back going again.

Once you figure out what works best for you, you'll know how to not let the water stops stop you.

To get better at running, the first thing you need to do is run. Sounds obvious, right? Start with running a little more often, then run a little bit longer. But even when you find the perfect amount of running for you, there are 5 non-running things that are critical to running your best. Being a human is hard. We all want to do the right things in life (and running), but it can feel like we are our own worst enemy at times. We know we can run faster, but we are held back by doubt. We know that consistent strength training will help with just about everything, but it's so easy to skip it. We know that the tough track workout will be worth the effort, but we end up slowing down or even stopping when the effort rises too high. Fortunately, you can train yourself to overcome...

I'm going to guess you really don't need anything on Prime Day. Yes, the marketing from the retail giant is pretty compelling. Believe me, I'm tempted to save a dollar on my favorite lotion and check out the deals on shoes I don't need. The reality is that most of the products I love go on sale every so often during the year and if I'm paying attention, I can get what I know I'm going to need later now when it's on sale. Which got me thinking, how often do I offer sales? You know, a little...
