you don't need prime day, you need this

I'm going to guess you really don't need anything on Prime Day.

Yes, the marketing from the retail giant is pretty compelling. Believe me, I'm tempted to save a dollar on my favorite lotion and check out the deals on shoes I don't need.

The reality is that most of the products I love go on sale every so often during the year and if I'm paying attention, I can get what I know I'm going to need later now when it's on sale.

Which got me thinking, how often do I offer sales? You know, a little discount just for those who are paying attention.

And the answer is, less than once a year.

Yep, the honest truth is I write hundreds of custom training plans a year and rarely stop to think, hey, why not make the deal a little sweeter for my true fans?

"Well," I answer myself, "because I'm just one person and what if they all take me up on it?"

"Okay, how about just the first 25 people who want it?" I reply.

"Let's do it!"

So instead of buying more things, treat yourself to something way more meaningful, like a custom training plan for your next race.

(even if your race is months away!)

From now until the end of July (or when I reach 25 plans, which ever comes first), you'll save 15% on gift certificates which you can use anytime for a 12-14 week custom training plan.

Q:

I think I'm done with marathons. I ran my last one a month ago and it was hot, miserable from mile one, and I probably had COVID. I've got a lot going on my life right now with aging parents and while I love the training, the thought of another marathon just doesn't excite me... until my running friends start talking about Boston. I fear the FOMO will get the best of me and I'll just sign up for another one.

A:

I'll let you in on a little secret:

I haven't raced a marathon in years and I still get that pang of FOMO. Even though marathon training doesn't fit into my life right now.

The beautiful thing about running is that it's a relationship. It can and will mean different things to you in different eras of your life.

Sometimes it's all hot passion and drama. And other times, it's a cherished old friend.

If you're still running regularly, or staying fit in other ways that you enjoy, you are likely better off than 95% of the population from a health and longevity point of view.

So take a step back from race training for a while and see what happens. Perhaps you will prefer not having the pressure of a goal. Or maybe you'll still want the variety and structure of planned training, but you don't need a race a on the books (I can help with that here.)

You might find that after some time you'll miss the marathon. Or you won't.

Just don't let what others are doing influence what's right for you in this season.

podcast

If you’re a marathoner training for a fall race and you’re running goal marathon paced workouts in July, you’re doing it wrong.

Let’s explore a better way.

In today’s Planted Runner Podcast, we’re going to talk about race-specific workouts from the 5k to the marathon.

You'll learn:

  • Why the timing of race-specific workouts matters
  • Why and how to plan workouts that focus on overall fitness instead, and
  • When to narrow your focus so you peak exactly on race day

I’ll also give you some examples of my favorite race-specific workouts for each distance.

This is a topic that will probably bust a lot of common myths out there.

Whether you are brand-new to racing or you’re a veteran runner looking for ways to sharpen up your fitness at exactly the right time, this is the episode for you and your running buddies.

So share it with them!

There's tired and then there's tiiiiiiiiired. When you are bone-tired after a hard workout, or you are dragging yourself straight to the couch after yet another stressful day of work, you're bound to wonder if it's all worth it. Fatigue isn't fun. But it's a tool and a teacher. Of course, fatigue can be problematic because it's an indicator of all sorts situations we want to avoid (too much stress, overtraining, illness, and more). It's there to tell us to slow down. But, when used wisely in...

Being a human is hard. We all want to do the right things in life (and running), but it can feel like we are our own worst enemy at times. We know we can run faster, but we are held back by doubt. We know that consistent strength training will help with just about everything, but it's so easy to skip it. We know that the tough track workout will be worth the effort, but we end up slowing down or even stopping when the effort rises too high. Fortunately, you can train yourself to overcome...
