is your brain elite-level?

Being a human is hard.

We all want to do the right things in life (and running), but it can feel like we are our own worst enemy at times.

  • We know we can run faster, but we are held back by doubt.
  • We know that consistent strength training will help with just about everything, but it's so easy to skip it.
  • We know that the tough track workout will be worth the effort, but we end up slowing down or even stopping when the effort rises too high.

Fortunately, you can train yourself to overcome what's holding you back and become a more mentally tough runner.

Here are a few ways how:

Q:

I'm struggling a lot with my nutrition as a plant-based runner. Do you offer meal plans?

A:

I get it.

It can certainly be challenging to make sure that you are getting enough of everything you need to fuel your running and your life, no matter if you are plant-based or not.

I can definitely help with that, but I don't offer meal plans for a few reasons.

The first one is that no one should be writing meal plans who is not a registered dietician.

A meal plan is a very specific and individualized prescription on precisely what to eat. It's a lot like how only doctors should be writing medication prescriptions.

Secondly, I don't think meal plans work. (At least not for very long.)

A rigid plan with every bite of food calculated out might be appealing to some at first, but adherence to this quickly becomes unsustainable for the vast majority of people.

A better idea for runners is to learn the principles of fueling before, during, and after your runs first. Nail that, and the rest of the pieces start to fill in more easily.

Next you'll want to take the time to learn the basics of general nutrition for athletes and the specifics of plant-based nutrition if that's for you. Armed with this knowledge (and a few good recipes), soon you'll find that it doesn't have to be a struggle.

I'm a certified sports nutrition specialist, so if you need more help, my coaching programs or my book just might be the perfect fit.

To get better at running, the first thing you need to do is run. Sounds obvious, right? Start with running a little more often, then run a little bit longer. But even when you find the perfect amount of running for you, there are 5 non-running things that are critical to running your best. There's tired and then there's tiiiiiiiiired. When you are bone-tired after a hard workout, or you are dragging yourself straight to the couch after yet another stressful day of work, you're bound to wonder if it's all worth it. Fatigue isn't fun. But it's a tool and a teacher. Of course, fatigue can be problematic because it's an indicator of all sorts situations we want to avoid (too much stress, overtraining, illness, and more). It's there to tell us to slow down. But, when used wisely in...

I'm going to guess you really don't need anything on Prime Day. Yes, the marketing from the retail giant is pretty compelling. Believe me, I'm tempted to save a dollar on my favorite lotion and check out the deals on shoes I don't need. The reality is that most of the products I love go on sale every so often during the year and if I'm paying attention, I can get what I know I'm going to need later now when it's on sale. Which got me thinking, how often do I offer sales? You know, a little...
